Moving on Up! (Or perhaps just over)

Greetings, all!

The time has come to migrate my site to a place that I hope will be easier for both you and me to use: I’ve gone to Substack!

Those of you who are subscribed to my blog through email have been automatically transferred over (I think/hope/pray), but those who are following me through a WordPress account will need to subscribe over there to continue receiving notifications when I write something new.

For now, this should be your last email notification from this site; from now on, they’ll be arriving through Substack.

Thank you all so much for reading, commenting, and encouraging me personally. You make me excited to keep this writing thing going! 🙂

I’ll see you over there in my new place in a bit. Again, here’s the link: https://sarahedevries.substack.com/

¡Hasta pronto, amigos míos!

  1. I have lived full time, never left Mexico in 15 years
I live not in a gringo area
I have accidentally gone to the wrong house
    Knocked on the door
A home thankfully owned by Mexicans
    No one shot me
    Nope
They took me out onto the street and helped me find my actual destination
    They involved the entire hood
    Yup
    Very kind
I backed my car up into my neighbours (I’m Canadian we spell that word different from American English)
Any way I backed my car up into their drive way
    They came out
Not to shoot me but to wave a rag and help me to navigate the procedure
Then went out onto the street to be sure my exit was safe
    They waved and smiled
    Like old friends
I wore a hoodie and walked freely around all my Mexican neighbourhoods (there’s that word again
    Except here
    We call them
    Colonials
Nope no one tried to shoot me
    I was even running
They knew it was a chilly evening or it was my choice of wardrobe
    Ha ha ha
    Do I feel safe
    I feel loved
    Watched over
    Taken care of
Ya al should try it out
You’ll be so pleasantly surprised how well you will be treated

  2. maybe you should have continued your mantra: Up to the Eastside.

Not sure if you are old enough to remember All in the Family/The Jeffersons. But that was part of their theme song.

In a sense, you are Moving on up to the Eastside. You are in Xalapa, Veracruz, and I imagine you don’t have a lot of gringa support.

    Good luck in your transition.
